Delaware Academy Seed Starting Event

Over two days (May 16 and 17), 318 students planted at least 636 vegetable seeds to be used in the school's gardens and taken home to add to or start their own gardens.

The students were assisted by Delaware Academy’s Food Service Director Christine Miller, Superintendent Jason Thomson and Network Administrator Luke Potrzeba; Farm Catskills’ Board Members Kate Ryan and Bob Reiter; Program Manager Sonia Janiszewski; and member volunteers, Cindy McGahee, Rosemarie Sheehan and Marilyn Huneke. Third grade volunteers, Logan Bryan, Joshua Mostert, Madison Miller and Katie Dean also joined in to help other students label their plants.

Student volunteer, Katie, informed us that, "This is awesome!" So, we asked her why and she responded that, "Kids that don't already have gardens will be able start them now with the seeds they planted."

We asked all 318 students whether they grow their own fruits or vegetables at home. 228 said yes and 90 said no.

In a couple of weeks, students will get to take one of their seedlings home. The other will be planted in the school garden and be used in the cafeteria when harvested later this year.
